The IU Healthy Cities Lab studies how climate change impacts cities, with a focus on extreme heat. We combine sensor technologies, machine learning, and community engagement to capture hyperlocal heat exposures and identify vulnerabilities. By integrating data-driven insights with human-centered design, we co-create tailored strategies that help cities build resilience and protect communities from the growing heat crisis.

The Healthy Cities Lab investigates how climate change, and especially extreme heat affects urban communities, and develops strategies to strengthen resilience. Our work spans three areas: Community Engagement, where we conduct needs assessments and co-create tailored heat management plans; Environmental Sensing and Modeling, using in-situ and wearable sensors to capture hyperlocal and personal exposures; and Communication and Decision Support Tools, designing and evaluating dashboards that integrate real-time data to guide targeted interventions.
