Mission
The IU Healthy Cities Lab advances research and practice at the intersection of climate change and urban resilience, with a particular focus on the growing crisis of extreme heat. We partner with cities and communities to understand how climate change impacts urban environments—and how urban environments in turn shape climate outcomes. Through a mixed-methods approach that integrates quantitative sensing and modeling with qualitative community engagement, we develop tailored, evidence-based solutions to help cities prepare for and adapt to extreme heat. Our work spans deploying and prototyping novel sensor technologies to capture hyperlocal temperatures and personal heat exposures, applying machine learning to predict urban form and heat risk, and conducting participatory research to center community needs in climate resilience planning. Our mission is to co-create healthier, more resilient cities by combining cutting-edge technology with human-centered design and collaboration, ensuring that communities across Indiana and beyond are equipped to respond to the challenges of a warming world.
